Time To Meditate
time to reboot mind, body & spirit

Hello Fellow 'New Normal' Seekers Welcome to Time to Meditate Day 1:

I hope and trust that you are holding your own at this time of isolation. In the spirit of health and wellbeing, as a counselling therapist specializing in anxiety, I invitie you to include something in your day that, in my experience, works. I’m talking about regular meditation for mindfulness, clarity, and a general sense of happiness. If you haven’t tried meditation, perhaps this time offers a pregnant possibility for creating a new healthy habit for yourself! Right now, many of us have a unique opportunity to make room for this technique that has proven, again and again, to be effective in becoming ‘present.’ My intention is simply to help breathe life into our potential, on an individual level as well as the collective whole.

So here’s the plan for the New Normal. The commitment is 33 days of short meditations, one per day. You will receive, from me alone, an active link daily to one of various Youtube meditations that have been selected for variety. Just carve out time to watch the clip of the day. Personally, I plan to meditate at 11 am, MST. Synergistically, the same time for you might be a great option. Regardless of whatever time you choose, try to make it the same time/place, if possible. You are creating a sustainable, positive habit for yourself after all.

This opportunity is self directed and self monitored for your own insights and deepening awareness. Who knows? This might change your life!:-)

I invite you to also consider the following questions for reflection, to help you track the effects of your meditation. I suggest that you answer the 3 questions now to get a base-line. Write down your answers. Then, re-asses your answers at the following intervals - 11 days in, after 22 days, and finally in 33 days. Rate yourself on a sliding scale between 1 and 10, with 1 being least/lowest/untrue and 10 being most/highest/true. Don’t judge your answers. Be honest and compassionate with yourself.

Questions:

1. What is the level of calm and balance in my life overall right now? (Rate from 1 to 10)
2. To what degree do I feel empowered in my life right now? (Rate from 1 to10)
3. How happy do I feel right now? (Rate from 1 to 10)

For today, Day 33, the selection is a lengthy and gorgeous sound recording of piano and flute music. (182 min)

I invite you to listen to as much of the recording as you like, while you use the Taoist ’Navel Meditation’ technique as described by Madisyn Taylor -

'To begin, assume a comfortable and natural seated position--either cross-legged on a cushion on the floor or on a chair with your legs facing forward. Maintaining an upright, balanced posture will ensure that you are physically centred and prevent fatigue. Close your eyes and relax your body gradually, starting at the toes and ending at the crown of the head. Take a moment to note any physical sensations you are feeling, such as the hardness of the floor under your legs or the weight of a piece of jewelry. When you are relaxed, breathe through the nose at your natural pace. With each inhalation, draw air deep into the abdomen, allowing the area surrounding your navel to rise and fall. Gradually focus your attention on the sensations caused by the inhalation and exhalation of breath. Feel the air flowing in and out of the nostrils as well as the expansion and contraction of the abdomen. If you find it difficult to concentrate on both sensations, concentrate only on the movement of the navel area.

As you endeavour to commune with the breath, you may notice that your mind strays. When this occurs, do not attach any significance to your thoughts. Simply bring your attention back to the flow of air into and out of your body and the rise and fall of your navel. Eventually, the torrent of mental noise flooding your mind will slow to a trickle, and you will learn to control the current of your thoughts until you are no longer at the mercy of your reactions.’

Finally, I had invited you on Day 1, Day 11, Day 22, and now on Day 33 to revisit the 3 questions to assess the benefits of meditating. Once again, rate yourself on a sliding scale between 1 and 10, with 1 being least/lowest/untrue and 10 being most/highest/true. Don’t judge your answers. Be honest and compassionate with yourself.

1. What is the level of calm and balance in my life overall right now? (Rate from 1 to 10)

2. To what degree do I feel empowered in my life right now? (Rate from 1 to10)

3. How happy do I feel right now? (Rate from 1 to 10)

I would very much appreciate your feedback about your journey with meditation and/or just keep in touch via email or on my Facebook page, Counselling for the Health of It.
